Accelerating innovation across the South West

Powered by the Office for Life Sciences, our South West Innovation Exchange programme is focused on accelerating life science development across the South West region.

The Innovation Exchange is designed to support innovators to develop, test and implement solutions to meet the challenges faced by the health and care system.

At Health Innovation South West, we work closely with health and care systems and providers, industry and academia partners to accelerate the design, development and deployment of health and care solutions within the South West region and beyond.

During 2023-24 our Innovation Exchange:

  • Provided universal signposting to 100+ innovators across the UK including our continued support to innovations that are referred via the National Innovation Service.
  • Supported a HIN powered Bridging the Gap event in partnership with Health Innovation Oxford focused on highlighting innovations aimed at increasing diagnosis of cancer.
  • Collaborated with Health Innovation South London in supporting the national Fem Tech accelerator that supported innovators to develop and build their health technologies.
  • Supported the continued development of our local life science and health tech sector including supporting RDUH and University of Exeter secure funding for the new SW Health Tech Research Centre.
  • Continued our highly successful collaboration with the Cornwall based Social Investor Resonance Ltd and their Health and Wellbeing Investment fund which was established in 2015-16.
  • By way of example, we have been involved in N-CODE, a UKRI EPSRC funded network+ of partners with backgrounds spanning academia, industry, hospitals and GP surgeries, charities and policy makers. Its aim is to support the development of new technologies that enable diagnosis and management of neurological conditions in the community rather than the hospital environment. The three-year programme of work supports innovators and academics with seed corn funding, research study groups, hot topic workshops and an in-person Expo. Health Innovation South West is represented by one of our Programme Managers, who also sits on the N-CODE Steering committee providing strategic direction, priority setting, funding decision making and advocacy in order to ensure that N-CODE delivers against its objectives.
  • Continued to strengthen our partnership with our three Integrated Care Boards (ICBs) enabling more effective sharing of innovation into our systems.

Future plans for the Innovation Exchange include launching a cancer focused innovation competition to provide innovation support to innovators focused on improving outcomes for cancer patients across the region.

We are also launching several partnership programmes including supporting the development of new XR related technologies focused on mental health and a new dementia innovation network in partnership with University of Exeter.

All our work is in conjunction with the National Innovation Network to improve and standardise our offer to the innovator community.

Impact of our Innovation Exchange in 2023/24:

  • Provided signposting support to over 200 innovators.
  • Provided real world evaluation advice and tailored support to 14 innovators, including finalising evaluation projects with six projects focused on children and young people’s mental health.
  • Supported circa 15 innovations into real world settings.
  • Supported a number of innovators to successfully secure SBRI and Innovate UK funding, including Maldaba Ltd and Lucida PI.
