Supporting Quality Improvement training across the South West
Health Innovation South West delivered Quality Improvement (QI) training to 244 trainee doctors and dentists. Participants realised improvements in their knowledge and understanding of the range of skills and tasks required to perform quality improvement, from engaging stakeholders to measuring change.
Health Innovation South West was commissioned by Health Education England (HEE) South West to deliver a comprehensive pilot QI training programme to Postgraduate Doctors in Training, Specialty, Staff Grade and Associate Specialist Doctors, and Dentists in Training across 19 Acute Trusts (HEE South West region), with the ultimate aim of supporting the delivery of excellent health care and health improvement to patients.
The programme, which ran from November 2022 until March 2024, included a co-design phase, creation of bespoke training and materials, delivery of ten bronze half day courses and three all day silver courses, and an evaluation of the training.
- 244 attendees in total across the courses: 197 Bronze, 72 Silver (25 individuals attended both courses).
- 94% of respondents from the Bronze Course post training survey reported good or comprehensive knowledge of all 11 learning areas.
- 93% of attendants felt confident to carry out a QI project after the course, and 89% at follow up, compared to just 27% before the course.
- 76% of respondents from the Silver Course post training survey reported good or comprehensive knowledge of all 13 learning areas.
- 100% of attendants felt confident to carry out a QI project after the course, compared to just 33% before the course.
