GaitSmart
GaitSmart provides affordable access to gold-standard gait quantification and personalised rehabilitation through exercises.
GaitSmart measures how your hips and knees are moving as you walk. It generates a musculoskeletal model and identifies the optimal set of six exercises.
Around 15 million people in the UK have difficulty walking due to osteoarthritis, joint replacement, frailty or a fall. GaitSmart helps these people.

GaitSmart is a sensor-based tool that measures gait kinematics and presents this in an easy-to-understand format.
It also provides an AI driven personalised exercise programme to address the muscle deficiencies identified from the gait assessment.
Straps are applied over clothing and seven small sensors are inserted. The person walks 10m and can use a walking aid. The test takes just 10 minutes and can be performed by a Grade 4 Health Care Assistant. Results are available immediately.
GaitSmart is a Class 1m Medical Device. Clinical and economic evidence is available to demonstrate clinical efficacy.

It is designed to help people in three different market sectors where mobility is an issue:
(i) older people who are at risk of falls or who have fallen,
(ii) people with osteoarthritis,
(iii) people rehabilitating after joint replacement.
It can be used in primary, secondary or community care. An individual can be tested once, to help with triage and diagnosis and to guide them on exercises to help improve muscle strength.
Alternatively, a full rehabilitation programme can be provided. This comprises up to 4 sessions, at least 3 weeks apart.
The objective data provides baseline gait data and quantifiable evidence of gait improvements. The report and personalised exercise plan provide motivation for the individual.
Evidence
Dynamic Metrics Ltd (DML) has undertaken clinical trials in the UK and Europe on patients with osteoarthritis (OA), joint replacement patients and frail older people at risk of or who have fallen.
Our clinical partners in the UK have included Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital London, Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital, Royal Devon and Exeter NHS Foundation Trust and North East London Foundation Trust. All of these have published evidence on healthy people to provide the reference data, hip replacement patients, knee replacement patients and frail older people who have fallen or are at risk of falling.
DML has also been a partner in an Innovative Medicines Initiative (IMI) funded project to ascertain phenotypes for knee OA. This longitudinal study included 300 patients who were measured at baseline and at month 24. Two publications stated that GaitSmart is more sensitive than conventional functional tests and could be used as an alternative or add-on to existing diagnostic options.
More recently DML’s AI driven gait rehabilitation programme has been tested on joint replacement patients and frail older people. Both studies demonstrated in improvement in gait and quality of life.
