The challenge
Around one in 100 people live with psychosis in the UK. For 80%, the risk of relapse each year is one in four. Relapses are harder to treat than a first episode of psychosis and often lead to hospital stays. Treating psychosis over a lifetime costs six times more than treating heart disease.
People with mental health conditions are three times more likely to visit A&E and five times more likely to be admitted to hospital as emergencies, placing significant strain on services. In Devon, A&E departments see around 27 visits a day from people living with a Severe Mental Illness (SMI), making up approximately 10% of all A&E visits.
In rural areas like the South West, limited access to specialist mental health care due to distance, high costs, long wait times, and lack of early intervention services worsens outcomes and increases reliance on crisis care.
The solution
CareLoop Health has developed a digital therapeutic (DTx) platform that provides real-time monitoring and early support for people living with severe mental illness (SMI) such as psychosis, schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.
Prescribed by clinicians and delivered remotely through a patient’s smartphone, the technology improves self-management through predictive Cognitive Behaviour Therapy for psychosis (CBTp), while providing clinicians with real-time symptom data to help identify early warning signs and intervene early.
Cornwall Partnership NHS Foundation Trust, Devon Partnership NHS Trust and LiveWell Southwest are the first NHS Trusts in the country to trial the platform with mental health teams. Onboarding is underway and the pilot aims to recruit over 100 patients.
Our work in partnership
Health Innovation South West is leading a real-world evaluation of the project, assessing its impact on relapse prevention, hospital admissions, NHS cost savings and self-management in the community.
We are also providing implementation support to the participating NHS providers, and driving regional scale-up. Findings from the evaluation can also be shared nationally, supporting the potential adoption of CareLoop beyond the region.
