Rehab Guru (RG) is a digital exercise prescription and a remote patient management solution with built-in telehealth, patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs), health-data monitoring, analytical tools, and it is accessible on all devices.
The innovation was co-developed with the Innovation Agency (North West Coast AHSN) for the North West pilot research project and insight for patients was gained through the AHSN's quality improvement patient panel (QUIPPs). Data can be gathered before, during, and after rehabilitation programmes aiding clinical decision-making.
Currently, RG is the only product on the market to provide these features, enabling a level of support and quality at scale, and empowering clinical teams to do more with less. Clinicians can handle larger caseloads, and keep better informed about their patient’s progress, with information that ensures better case management.
RG is in use by 10 NHS trusts and the software exceeds the standards of the NHS Digital Data Security, and Protection Toolkit, GDPR compliance, is DTAC compliant, certified to UKAS ISO 27001:2015 and Cyber Essentials Plus.
RG offers a free app for patients, allowing telehealth appointments, reminders, recording of activity, exercise compliance, health outcomes, supporting the patient in achieving their goals to independently manage their condition.
The problem
A recent BMJ article identified challenges to the NHS-long-term-plan, such as staff shortages, backlogs and inequalities the pandemic further exposed. Rehab Guru’s platform was adapted in alignment with the NHS-Long-term plan.
One prominent problem area that we identified synergies with is pulmonary disease, a national clinical priority. Pulmonary rehab (PR) improves exercise capacity or quality of life in 90% of patients who complete a programme, and reduces hospital admissions. Our pilot research with the Innovation Agency highlighted increased PR service capacity, evidence-based innovations, cost-effectiveness, and improved health-inequalities.
Other national priorities such as cardiac rehab, musculoskeletal medicine, orthopaedic medicine and neuro rehab are benefiting from Rehab Guru. Feedback supports our belief that Rehab Guru also supports the NHS’s drive to improve social care, mental wellbeing, and physical health.
We believe that Rehab Guru has a significant contributing part to play in addressing many of the UK’s health service priorities.
Evidence
Case studies evidence show the benefit of Rehab Guru, with higher-quality pilot evidence created within the AHSN network for pulmonary rehab, developing an in-year budget impact model, demonstrating that RG saved 77 minutes of clinician time per patient, £54 per patient, offering time and cost-effectiveness, reducing waiting times, utilising lower-grade staff, and provide healthcare at distance if patients are unable to travel.
Any professional supporting an individual can monitor compliance, progress treatment, monitor outcomes, and support patients.
A collaboration with Imperial College on physical activity following Covid-19 infection supported General Practitioners, and was published in the BMJ:
