Finding a Way Forward: Trauma-Informed Care for Patients and Staff

Do you work with people with severe mental illness (SMI) across Cancer Screening Services and/or Maternity and Neo-natal teams? Are you looking to understand more about trauma-informed approaches to improve health outcomes for those you support? 

If so, then join us to: 

  • Hear from expert speakers on trauma-informed approaches and those with lived experience 
  • Learn how patients and healthcare staff across the system can be equipped with important trauma-informed knowledge, skills and support structures 
  • Work together on the day to understand what enabling factors can support you and your teams to implement Trauma Informed Approaches 

This event will be split into two sessions in the afternoon across Cancer Screening and Maternity & Neonatal teams and is aimed at health professionals as well as voluntary and community sector partners working directly with patients with SMI.

Morning session (understanding trauma-informed care in practice) 

  • We will hear from experts to give us an overview of ‘What is Trauma Informed Approach and why is it important?’ 
  • We will share real world case studies and insights, with learning from primary, secondary, and community care settings and how teams have embedded trauma-informed approaches into practice. 
  • We will hear from experts by experience to look at what factors can impact people with Severe Mental Illness, and how Trauma Informed approaches can inform and improve healthcare services for these patients

Lunch enjoy a free lunch and a chance to network with colleagues and participants


Q&A panel with speakers  

  • A chance to reflect on the previous session and ask questions to the speakers from the morning session

Tailored breakouts for deeper exploration

The group will break out into two key workshop areas: Cancer Screening and Maternity & Neonatal 

The workshops will be interactive, with the opportunity for all attendees to contribute and help shape future developments in trauma-informed practice across the South West.  

Key objectives of the afternoon breakout session will be to focus on: 

  • Why: Why do we implement a Trauma Informed approach 
  • Identifying enabling factors: what factors do your teams need in order to make changes  
  • Challenging barriers: Understanding limiting factors and how they can be negotiated 
  • Readiness for Implementation: Identifying where teams are along the journey to implement approaches 
  • What next: What are the next steps? What kind of support is needed?

We will come together at the end of the day to discuss:  

  • What next?  
  • How can Health Innovation South West support you moving forward? 
  • A Chance for feedback and evaluation of the day
