Cancer companion app wins Medilink South West Innovation Award

An innovative cancer companion app supported by Health Innovation South West has been recognised for its impact on cancer patient care.  

MySunrise, a free mobile app providing information and support to cancer patients and their families at their NHS hospital, won the Delivering Innovation Into Health And Care Award at the recent Medilink South West Awards 2023.  

The annual event, held in March at M Shed in Bristol and sponsored by the West of England Health Innovation Network, celebrates med-tech innovation in the South West. The Delivering Innovation Into Health And Care Award recognises collaborations with the NHS that are having a major impact or benefiting business performance and patient care.   

The MySunrise app offers help with symptom support, access to video consults, rapid access to oncology teams, treatments, support groups and more, all designed with a focus on helping to improve treatment outcomes for cancer patients. 

Originally developed by the oncology team at the Royal Cornwall Hospital, it was rolled out across all five cancer centres in the South West in 2020. Since then Health Innovation South West has been supporting the MySunrise team to create design improvements, evidence values, increase patient engagement, and make the content more accessible across its communities. 

The award was collected by MySunrise Directors Dr Alastair Buick and Dr George Brighton (pictured above left to right).  

 This is a really fantastic win for our team and we are thrilled to get this recognition in the South West. The AHSN network and our local Health Innovation South West have been a great support to the development of our platform. We look forward to further developing MySunrise and supporting cancer patients in the South West of England.
