New report highlights local changes improving patient safety nationwide

A new report published by the Health Innovation Network highlights how regional teams are delivering National Patient Safety Improvement Programmes on the frontline. 

The 2025-2026 Patient Safety Impact Report includes case studies and the latest data focusing on four priority areas. Read about the Martha’s Rule programme – managing deterioration; medicines safety – management of antipsychotic medicines in people with a learning disability; and maternity and neonatal programmes supporting teams to better stabilize pre-term infants and manage deterioration in mothers and babies.  

Nationwide, from 2018 – 2026 the Medicines Safety programme has saved 2,597 lives; the Managing Deterioration programme prevented over 44,969 emergency admissions in care homes and triggered 574 potentially life-saving interventions. The Maternal and Neonatal Safety programme has saved up to 1966 lives and prevented over 600 cases of cerebral palsy.
